Alle Zündsysteme für moderne Benzinmotoren verwenden Zündspulen für dieselbe Grundfunktion. Eine Zündspule in der Zündanlage eines Autos wandelt die Batteriespannung in die Tausende Volt um, die benötigt werden, um einen elektrischen Funken in den Zündkerzen zu erzeugen, der den Kraftstoff entzündet. Bei modernen Systemen entfällt der Verteiler und die Zündung wird elektronisch gesteuert. Es werden viele kleinere Spulen mit einer Spule pro Zündkerze oder einer Spule für zwei Zündkerzen verwendet (z. B. zwei Spulen in einem Vierzylindermotor oder drei Spulen in einem Sechszylindermotor).
