Eine Stoßstange ist eine lange, schmale Metallstange, die in Motoren mit „hängenden Ventilen“ verwendet wird, um die Bewegung von der Nockenwelle (die sich im Motorblock befindet) auf die Ventile (die sich im Zylinderkopf befinden) zu übertragen. Das untere Ende einer Stoßstange ist mit einem Stößel versehen, an dem die Nockenwelle anschlägt. Stoßstangenmotoren sind auch einfach und mit viel weniger beweglichen Teilen aufgebaut, die mit der Zeit kaputtgehen können. Das ist ein wesentlicher Grund dafür, dass die Kleinblock-V8-Motoren von Chevy für ihre Zuverlässigkeit und Langlebigkeit bekannt sind.
